Cycle

The cold breeze of the night was oddly pleasant, he thought, as he watched the city lights glimmering in the lake. The distance of the suburbs from the city was high enough that silence dominated. It was a tranquil atmosphere, one he indulged in every night. It always seemed to be the only time when he could could clear his thoughts and feel at peace.

Nevertheless, he was exhausted, so he stood up before he felt tempted enough to nap right on the bench. It was late, and the shop was also about to close. It was only a five minute walk away, and conveniently placed right next to his house.

“Hello!”

The usual, cheerful voice greeted him after opening the door to the shop. It was the daughter of the shop’s owner, and the only employee. He looked at her and nodded.

His breakfast wasn’t much, and it was nearly always the same—yogurt and cereal. He never found a lot of enjoyment in eating, as proven by his thin stature.

He gave the money to the shopkeeper, who smiled in return.

“Thank you,” she said. “Have a good night!”

She was no longer trying to start conversations with him. It was a relief, but also a little disappointing. He tried a smile, nodded, and went on his way.

His home was simple, filled only with necessities, a few books and electronics, and a wandering cat. After petting his cat, he changed his clothes and flopped on the bed straight away.

And so, the cycle ended once again.
